In SOIL, Sarah Aviaja Hammeken explores what happens to a person’s self-perception when they fundamentally identify with a culture whose language they have not been given. When does one become a part of a culture, and who is it that one truly longs to be recognized by?

Particularly the Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) language and the continuous journey of mastering it are central to Hammeken’s work with SOIL – a bodily exploration of communication, its power, and its nuances.
